Calories in hummus: the dip is fine — the scooping is the meal
The clean number first: plain hummus is USDA FDC 2707402 — 243 kcal per 100 g (7.4 P / 14.9 C / 17.1 F). That's about 70 kcal per generous tablespoon. Nobody gains weight on two tablespoons of chickpeas and tahini. The mezze table is another story:
The honest session math
| What actually happens | Amount | kcal |
|---|---|---|
| Hummus, restaurant bowl, mostly finished | 150 g | ≈365 |
| Olive-oil flood on top | 1 tbsp | ≈120 |
| Pita/khubz for scooping | 1½ breads (~130 g, typical flatbread ≈275/100 g) | ≈360 |
A casual "just hummus" mezze session ≈ 500–850 kcal — the dip contributes barely a third. Half of every hummus question is really a bread question.
Bowls differ more than brands admit
Restaurant hummus runs oilier than the survey entry; supermarket tubs print exact labels (Proba's barcode scanner reads those offline). For the restaurant bowl, the scan estimates your actual serving — editable grams, cited receipt, same answer every time.
